This article reminded me of an interview I had that "started" with a half-hour wait while I watched the team I would be managing work their way through some hot-button issued they faced. When the interviewers (upper management) returned and apologized for the delay, I replied with a hearty thanks for allowing me to see the group in action. The interview included time with the team, after which the upper management interviewers left the room and invited the team and me to ask each other anything we wanted. GREAT INTERVIEW!

The problem with Steve's father's methodology that I have seen in the past is that there are people out there who will give you an unsolvable problem just to see how long you will beat your head against the wall before asking for help. It's impossible to tell which situation you are in, and real easy to make yourself look bad as you try to second guess the interviewer.

Frankly, and here's a huge heads-up to the corner office people, a potential hire can and will learn everything s/he needs to know about the company culture by how s/he is interviewed. If HR is populated with Catberts (TM, "Dilbert"), it's pretty safe to assume that upper management is populated with pointy-haired bosses.

Great article!
I agree interviews need to focus more on soft skills, especially for technical positions.

ps You may want to run a spell check on your next article. Thanks and keep 'em coming.

Yeah, doesn't it sound great? If your company is already using XP in development, it should
A) Be easy to introduce this way of hiring because people already know the basics
B) result in better hires, because you'll be more likely to hire people who'll be good at XP.

If you try it, PLEASE let me know how it works for you!
