I think you are on to something. There are definitely readers who don't like--or actually don't want to learn how to use--RSS. They are happy :) and contented with email. I started realizing this recently as a certain number of readers choose to comment directly via email vs. using the blog. It's just a matter of comfort as well as privacy for some. So far 30 people have signed up - we'll see where it goes. I don't really see this feature as a newsletter - it will function only as a reminder that there is new content on the blog.
