I work for a large state University in research and our office is run exactly opposite of that. It really is a stark contrast. I'm going to grad school for HR and I can say that this job has made me fully aware of how NOT to structure an organization.

Thinking about it, I remember how when I joined my current organisation, I had two days (full days) of interviews, including panels of all the managers I was going to manage.

I like the idea that individuals could choose who they work for. Obviously a new employee wouldn't be able to make an informed decision though. Most established employees could tell which people they respect and would choose to work for.

I don't know if we're ready for Semco yet but I'd like to think that we're doing better that the University of Alabama! Certainly every policy we have includes something akin to Nordstrom's admonishment. And I really like the sound of the Lars Kolind book.

"What do you think - would you like to work in a radical company? "

I would love to work in such a company! In my view working in such a company is pretty much like flying... and... as Leonardo da Vinci said:
"When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."

People might fear working for such a company because it looks like it requires the ability to fly... and...actually it does require that but what they don't know is that they were born with wings.
