Why would anyone argue about an extra free day at which you're paid for doing no work?

How is a company that gives N holidays + 1 anniversary day different from a company that gives N+1 holidays? How is that day different?

Our company gives three extra leave days a year once you've been with the company for three years. If you wanted to use it on your work anniversary you could. I'd rather take my birthday off though.
It is definitely something that I've talked about to other people and is a really nice way to reward your staff.

I agree with "selfcoachingcards." We have discussed it, but don't like the idea of saying, "Great job on another year. Now go home." Instead, we started giving personalized, hand-written anniversary cards to each employee on their anniversary. It's signed with a personalized message from the company President, and has been extremely well received. Even as the person who implemented the program, it means so much to be personally recognized for what you've accomplished over the years. We also have individual receptions for all employees who have been here a significant number of years (starting at 20).

Employees at Decade Software get the day off on their birthdays. This day is considered holiday pay. Additionally, we offer flex and makeup time to make it easy for employees to adjust to schedules that make them and their families happy.

I think these are both fantastic ideas, I work for a Public institution, but highly agree with the annual celebration idea, I value my leave and personal time and would be motivated by recieving additional one day perk.

as for the company anniversary_ I think that is a great idea to celebrate with your employees the sucess of another year in business.

I am enjoying your posts as guest blogger.

Paid days off are a great gift to employees - and worth more than any monetary reward, I agree.
However, on the aniversary of my company I would want to celebrate WITH my employees who made another aniversary possible; instead of sending them home :)

Such tactics will not only increase motivation and increase productivity, but also make your employees more loyal and committed. Employee Retention is not just desired but an essential cost-cutting strategy.

Hi Chris, you are right. A little intention will help tie the perk to why it is offered. A gift that has no meaning behind it won't have as much impact. Maybe the company can make a ritual out of it. Give their employees a "thank you" card explaining how much they mean to the company and why they deserve a day off.
