    Problems worthy of attack,

  • Guru meditation

Full marks to Tveskov for knowing the answer to a previous question, and for the additional explanation.

I’ve heard a different legend of the origin of guru meditation: It is said that the developers were playing with a new input device which was a balancing board that you stood on, and by leaning over you could control for example a game. And one of the uses was to try and stand still on the board, as if you were meditating. Hence guru meditation.

But I like Bjarnes version better.

  • Street musicians giving away money

I saw something really cool today: A choir of 10 or 12 middle-aged swedish men were singing in one of the squares in central Copenhagen (they were really good, btw). On the ground in front of them, they’d placed a cap, and people of course put in money. And here’s the twist: One of the men then started giving the money away. He took the cap and gave money to a kid standing there with his mother and to a homeless guy sitting on the ground.

Then they went around to other people collecting more money (I gave what change I had). I saw them again further down the street, giving away some of that money to a guy collecting for Africa. So they weren’t really collecting, they were redistributing. Nifty. Actually I think it might have been a bachelor party, but a remarkably well behaved and generous one, in that case.

  • A sh*t job

If ever you’ve doubted that meaning and satisfaction can be found in any job, read this article about a guy whose job it is to clean up dog waste.

  • Tom Lehrer interview

To my great surprise, Tom Lehrer is still alive – he just hasn’t made any records for 35 years. For those not in the know, Tom Lehrer is a mathematician who became a very popular satirist and singer in the 60’s. His humour was sharp and dry, and his tunes were catchy. His academic background often showed, for instance in his elements song, which is simply all the elements set to music.

After making a few records he returned to academia, as you can read in this interview (via bound.dk). Random Tom Lehrer quote:

I do have a cause though: Obscenity. (pause) I’m for it.

  • Roller coaster sites

I became a roller coaster fanatic a couple of years back on a trip to Florida. Before that, I’d been too scared to get on anything but pretty small coasters, but after having tried the wildest that they have to offer, I’m now a pro.

Now, we don’t have big roller coasters in Denmark, so until the next trip I’ll have to enjoy them by proxy. A good site for that is the Roller Coaster DataBase which is to roller coasters what imdb is to movies. Pretty much every roller coaster in the world is listed with stats and pictures.

For roller coaster reviews, my favourite is thrillride.com. There aren’t that many review, but they’re very well written – almost like being there yourself. Now: Who wants to go to California and try this one.

  • Egoland online

Yes, yes, yes: Egoland is online with a new strip every day. For those who don’t know, this is the best daily comic strip in Denmark, and one of the best in the world.

The artwork is brilliant, the humour alternates between the lowbrow and deep philosophy, and the whole package seems to never get old or tired, only better and better. It’s in danish though, so the rest of the world will just have to grieve at what they’re missing.

Here’s one of my recent favourites, which pretty much illustrates the depth of the series.

  • Psychological test

    Here’s a riddle for you:
It is a story about a girl. While at the funeral of her own mother, she met this guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing, he was her dream guy, and she fell in love with him there but never asked for his number and could not find him.

A few days later the girl killed her own sister.

Question: What is her motive in killing her sister?

Give this some thought for a while before you click more to see the answer.

  • National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo is a seriously cool project: You sign up, and the idea is that during november 2003, you’ll write a novel. To make it easier, there are no quality restrictions, only quantity: You must write at least 50.000 words. I LOVE the idea. This means no agonizing over insignificant details. It means you can’t procrastinate and delay. You’ll have to get down and write!
