Steve JobsYour work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.

As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

– Steve Jobs in his commencement address to Stanford in June 2005.

I have to agree with Steve – especially since I wrote a post last week on why you should not like your job

Great quote — the whole address was very inspirational. Jobs’s philosophy here is very similar to Ayn Rand’s view of work, that you essentially make yourself through your productive ability; your work is a reflection of your primary values, and therefore a reflection of your most personal self.

Thanks ncloud. I agree with you and Ayn Rand :o) Work is increasingly coming to define us.

Some people think we need to reduce that effect, and divorce ourselves more from our work, but I think it’s a much better bet to embrace it, go with it and then create a work life that allows you to unfold your most personal self.

Alexander, I agree. I am glad to see the companies are also coming to the realization that if their employees have “lives”, then they are much happier, work better, and are more productive. In a real sense, this is a synergistic relationship between employer and employee. I find this a far more agreeable arrangement than the typical 8-5 work environment.
